What this converter does
The converter takes one MP4 file, reads its audio, and produces an MP3 you can download. These are the features you will see:
- File details on upload. The tool shows the file name, format, size and duration so you can confirm you chose the right file.
- Video preview. A built-in player lets you watch the video before converting. A remove button lets you swap the file.
- MP3 quality selector. Choose 64, 96, 128, 160, 192, 256 or 320 kbps. The default is 192 kbps.
- Estimated MP3 size. Before you convert, the tool shows an approximate size for the MP3 at the bitrate you picked.
- One-click conversion. Press Convert to MP3, then download the result.
How to convert MP4 to MP3
- Choose your MP4 file. Drag the file into the tool or click to browse. Check the name, size and duration shown.
- Preview the video. Press play to confirm it is the right file. Use the remove button to pick a different one.
- Select the MP3 quality. Use 192 kbps for a balance of quality and size. Choose a higher bitrate for music and a lower one for speech.
- Read the estimated size. The estimate updates with your bitrate choice so you know what to expect.
- Click Convert to MP3. The tool extracts the audio and encodes it as MP3.
- Download the MP3. The file is saved to your device, ready to play, edit or share.
What happens when an MP4 is converted to MP3?
Converting MP4 to MP3 means reading the audio stream inside the MP4 container, decoding it, and encoding it again in the MP3 format. The video stream is skipped.
| Step | What happens | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Select MP4 | The file is opened and its streams are identified | The tool finds the audio track and the duration |
| 2. Extract audio | The audio stream is separated from the video stream (demuxing) | The picture is ignored |
| 3. Decode | The audio, usually AAC, is decoded into raw audio | The sound is ready to be re-encoded |
| 4. Adjust if needed | Sample rate or channel layout may be adapted to fit MP3 | Surround audio is reduced to stereo |
| 5. Encode as MP3 | The audio is compressed at your chosen bitrate | Bitrate sets quality and file size |
| 6. Download | The finished .mp3 file is handed to you | The original MP4 stays untouched |
Because the video is not re-encoded, extracting audio is generally much quicker than converting a video to another video format.
MP4 vs MP3: what is the difference?
An MP4 is a container that can hold video, audio, subtitles and metadata together. An MP3 is an audio-only file format. That is why an MP4 to MP3 conversion always removes the picture.
| Feature | MP4 | MP3 |
|---|---|---|
| File type | Multimedia container (MPEG-4 Part 14) | Audio format (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) |
| Primary purpose | Store and stream video with sound | Store and play audio |
| Video support | Yes | No |
| Audio support | Yes | Yes |
| Common codecs | Video: H.264 (AVC), H.265 (HEVC). Audio: usually AAC | MP3 (lossy) |
| Compression | Lossy, depends on the codecs inside | Lossy |
| Typical use | Films, clips, screen recordings, social video | Music, podcasts, lectures, voice notes |
| Compatibility | Video players, phones, browsers, social platforms | Almost every phone, car stereo, computer and music player |
| File size | Larger, because it includes video | Much smaller |
| Quality considerations | Depends on video and audio codecs and bitrates | Depends on the bitrate chosen at encoding |
MP4 is a container, not a codec. Two MP4 files can contain different audio codecs, which is one reason results vary between files.
MP3 quality and bitrate guide
Bitrate is the amount of audio data stored per second, measured in kilobits per second (kbps). A higher bitrate keeps more detail and creates a larger file.
| Bitrate | Approximate quality | Typical use | Size per minute | Size per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 128 kbps | Acceptable for most speech and casual music | Lectures, voice notes, small files | about 0.96 MB | about 57.6 MB |
| 160 kbps | Good | Podcasts, general listening | about 1.20 MB | about 72 MB |
| 192 kbps | Very good for most listeners | Default choice for music and mixed content | about 1.44 MB | about 86.4 MB |
| 256 kbps | High | Music where quality matters | about 1.92 MB | about 115.2 MB |
| 320 kbps | The highest standard MP3 bitrate | Best MP3 quality, largest files | about 2.40 MB | about 144 MB |
Which bitrate should you choose?
- Speech, interviews, lectures: 128 kbps is usually enough.
- Music and general use: 192 kbps is a sensible default.
- Music you care about: 256 or 320 kbps leaves less room for added loss.
A higher bitrate cannot bring back detail the source video never had. If the MP4 audio was recorded at low quality, a 320 kbps MP3 will be larger but not better.
MP3 file size and conversion time
MP3 size (MB) ≈ bitrate (kbps) × duration (seconds) ÷ 8 ÷ 1000
| Example | Bitrate | Estimated size |
|---|---|---|
| 15 second clip | 192 kbps | about 360 KB |
| 4 minute song | 192 kbps | about 5.8 MB |
| 10 minute recording | 128 kbps | about 9.6 MB |
| 1 hour lecture | 128 kbps | about 57.6 MB |
| 1 hour music mix | 320 kbps | about 144 MB |
The estimate shown by the tool is approximate. The finished file can differ slightly because of headers and tags. Conversion time depends on the length of the file, the speed of your device, your browser and the bitrate. Longer files take longer.
Large files
This tool accepts MP4 files up to 250 MB. Browser-based tools are limited by device memory, so for very large recordings, an offline tool such as FFmpeg can be more reliable.
Audio quality considerations
Does converting MP4 to MP3 reduce quality? Slightly, in most cases. The audio inside most MP4 files is already compressed as AAC. Converting it to MP3 compresses it a second time, which is called transcoding between two lossy formats. At 192 kbps or higher the extra loss is usually hard to hear.
Ways to limit quality loss
- Choose 192 kbps or higher for music.
- Convert once from the original MP4, not from a copy of a copy.
- Do not expect a higher bitrate to improve a poor source.
- If you only need the audio and not specifically MP3, consider extracting the AAC audio without re-encoding (see the FFmpeg section below).
Sample rate, channels and metadata
Video audio is often 48 kHz, while music is often 44.1 kHz. MP3 supports both. MP3 is practically limited to stereo or mono, so surround audio such as 5.1 is mixed down to two channels. Mono sources stay mono in effect.
MP4 files may carry titles, dates or other tags. MP3 stores tags as ID3 metadata, and not all fields carry across. This converter maps available file metadata into ID3v2.3 tags; cover art is not included.
What happens to the video and the original file?
- The video is discarded. The MP3 contains sound only.
- Your original MP4 is not modified. Conversion creates a new file.
- The original audio is decoded and re-encoded. The MP3 is a new encoding of the sound, not a copy of the original audio stream.
Supported devices and platforms
Because the converter runs in a web browser, it is not tied to one operating system. MP3 is one of the most widely supported audio formats, so the result plays on phones, computers, car stereos, smart speakers and most music players.
Privacy and security
Your file is processed in your browser on your own device and is not sent to SonicLab’s servers. Check how any online converter handles your file before you upload something sensitive.
- Read the privacy statement to see whether files are uploaded and how long they are kept.
- Avoid uploading confidential recordings to services that do not explain their handling.
- You can test whether a tool uploads your file by watching network activity in your browser’s developer tools while it runs.
Common MP4 to MP3 problems and solutions
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The MP3 has no sound | The MP4 has no audio track, or the audio is muted | Play the video in the preview first and check the volume |
| The file will not load | Corrupted file, unsupported codec, or a wrong file extension | Re-export the video, or try opening it in VLC to test it |
| The video will not preview, but the file is valid | The browser may not support the video codec (for example some H.265 files) | Try another browser, or convert anyway if the tool allows it |
| The conversion is very slow or fails | Large file or limited device memory | Close other tabs, use a smaller file, or use FFmpeg for very large files |
| The MP3 is too large | High bitrate or a long recording | Lower the bitrate, for example from 320 to 192 or 128 kbps |
| The MP3 sounds different from the video | Re-encoding, channel mixdown, or a low-quality source | Use a higher bitrate and convert from the original file |
| The duration looks wrong | An incomplete recording or a damaged file header | Compare the duration shown on upload with the original |
| A protected file will not convert | The video uses DRM protection | Protected content cannot be converted |
Why does the MP3 sound different from the original video?
Several factors can make the MP3 sound different:
- Second compression. AAC to MP3 is lossy to lossy, so small differences can appear.
- Channel mixdown. Surround sound is reduced to stereo.
- Low bitrate. At 128 kbps or below, music can sound thinner.
- Source quality. The MP3 can only be as good as the audio in the MP4.
- Player differences. Volume, equalizer and loudness settings differ between video and music players.
Other ways to convert MP4 to MP3
VLC media player. Open Media > Convert / Save, add the MP4, choose an audio MP3 profile, set a destination file name ending in .mp3, and start.
FFmpeg (command line)
Convert to MP3 at 192 kbps:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vn -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.mp3-vn removes the video and -b:a 192k sets the bitrate.
Extract the AAC audio without re-encoding (no added quality loss, works when the audio is AAC):
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vn -c:a copy output.m4aPython (MoviePy 2.x)
from moviepy import VideoFileClip
with VideoFileClip("input.mp4") as clip:
clip.audio.write_audiofile("output.mp3", bitrate="192k")In MoviePy 1.x, import from moviepy.editor instead.

It removes the video and keeps only the audio. Your original MP4 is not changed.
Does converting MP4 to MP3 reduce quality?
Usually slightly, because the audio is re-encoded from AAC to MP3. At 192 kbps or higher the difference is often hard to hear.
Which MP3 bitrate should I choose?
Use 128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps for general use and music, and 256 or 320 kbps when music quality matters most.
How large will the MP3 be?
Multiply the bitrate in kbps by the duration in seconds, then divide by 8,000 to get megabytes. At 192 kbps, one minute is about 1.44 MB. The tool also shows an estimate before you convert.
Can I convert MP4 to MP3 on a phone?
The converter runs in a browser. Mobile use depends on browser and device support for file access and WebAssembly.
Do I need to install any software?
No. The converter runs in your browser.
Is online MP4 to MP3 conversion safe?
Your file is processed in your browser on your own device and is not sent to SonicLab’s servers. Avoid uploading sensitive files to tools whose file handling is unclear.
Can I convert YouTube videos to MP3?
This tool converts MP4 files that you upload. It does not download from YouTube. Only convert content you own or have permission to use.
Why is my MP4 not converting?
Common causes are a corrupted file, an unsupported codec, a video with no audio track, a protected file, or a very large file. Test the file in the preview, try another browser, or re-export the video. Test the file in the preview, try another browser, or re-export the video.
Can I convert more than one file at a time?
The tool currently handles one file at a time.
What is the difference between MP4 and M4A?
M4A is an audio-only file in the MP4 family, usually containing AAC audio. It can be extracted from an MP4 without re-encoding. MP3 is more universally supported. MP3 is more universally supported.
