How to convert OGG to MP3

  1. Add the .ogg file. Drop it on the converter, or click to pick it from your phone or computer. The tool accepts .ogg, .oga and .opus files.
  2. Choose an MP3 bitrate. Pick 192 kbps for music. 128 kbps is plenty for voice messages and podcasts.
  3. Convert and save. Click Convert, then download your MP3. The original OGG stays untouched.

Why your OGG file won't play

OGG is an open format that many everyday devices never adopted. MP3 is the one format they all share, so changing OGG to MP3 removes the problem at its source.

  • iPhone and iPad. The built-in Music app does not accept OGG, so .ogg songs cannot go into your library or play offline there. iOS 18.4 and later can play OGG inside the web browser; older versions cannot open it at all.
  • Car stereos. Many head units read MP3 from a USB stick or CD but skip OGG files without any message.
  • Editing and presentation software. Some video editors, slideshow programs and older audio tools refuse .ogg imports.
  • Voice messages. Messaging apps often save voice notes as Opus audio inside an .ogg file. Email recipients and many desktop players cannot open them.

An MP3 copy fixes all four, without a new player app or codec pack.

OGG vs MP3 at a glance

OGG wins on efficiency. MP3 wins on compatibility.

Keep the OGG format when file size matters and every device you use can play it. Choose MP3 when the file has to work on whatever the listener owns. Working the other way round for a game or website? Convert MP3 to OGG instead.

Will converting OGG to MP3 reduce quality?

A little. Both formats are lossy, so the MP3 is a copy of a copy. At a sensible bitrate the difference is very hard to hear, but the MP3 will never sound better than the OGG it came from.

Your OGG fileMP3 bitrate to pick
Voice messages, podcasts, lectures128 kbps
Most music192 kbps
Music you plan to keep for years256 kbps
  • Higher is not always better. A bitrate far above the source only makes a bigger file.
  • Surround becomes stereo. MP3 carries two channels at most, so a multichannel OGG is mixed down to stereo.
  • Use the original if you have it. If the WAV or FLAC recording still exists, convert that to MP3 instead of the OGG. Try the WAV to MP3 converter or the FLAC to MP3 converter.

MP3 bitrate guide

BitrateBest forApprox. size per minute
64 kbpsSpeech, voice notes~0.48 MB
96 kbpsPodcasts, spoken word~0.72 MB
128 kbpsGeneral listening~0.96 MB
192 kbpsMusic (recommended default)~1.44 MB
256 kbpsHigh-quality music~1.92 MB
320 kbpsMaximum MP3 quality~2.40 MB

At 192 kbps, a three-minute song produces an MP3 of roughly 4.3 MB.

Getting your MP3 onto the device

Once converted, the MP3 behaves like any other music file.

  • iPhone or iPad. Add the MP3s to your music library the way you add other songs, or open them from your phone's file browser.
  • Car stereo. Copy the MP3s to a USB stick formatted as FAT32, the format most head units read.
  • Sharing. Attach the MP3 to an email or a chat. The other person presses play without installing anything.
  • Editing. Import the MP3 into your video or slideshow project like any other audio track.

What happens to your OGG files

Your files stay on your device. The converter runs in your browser, so your OGG is never uploaded and nobody else sees it. The new MP3 is made on your device and disappears when you close the tab, unless you save it. No signup, no email.

If your OGG file won't convert

  • The download was incomplete. An OGG that cut off mid-download fails or converts only partly. Download it again.
  • The file ends in .oga or .opus. Both use the same Ogg container as .ogg and convert normally. If the file picker greys them out, rename the ending to .ogg and try again.
  • The file is a video. Files ending in .ogv or .ogx can hold video. Only the audio track becomes an MP3.
  • An unusual codec is inside. Most OGG files hold Vorbis or Opus. Rare files using other codecs, such as Speex, may fail.
  • The MP3 converts but won't play. Older car stereos and players sometimes skip high-bitrate files. Convert again at 128 or 192 kbps.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an OGG file to MP3?

Drop the .ogg file into the converter at the top of this page, choose a bitrate and click Convert. When it finishes, save the MP3.

Why won't my iPhone play OGG files?

The iPhone Music app does not support OGG, and iOS versions before 18.4 cannot play it anywhere. Converting the file to MP3 makes it play in the Music app and every other player, with nothing extra to install.

Will my MP3 sound worse than the OGG?

Only slightly, because both formats discard some audio data. At 192 kbps most people cannot tell them apart. The conversion makes the file playable; it does not improve it.

How do I convert an OGG voice message to MP3?

Save the voice message from your messaging app to your phone or computer, then drop it here. Voice notes are usually Opus audio inside an .ogg file, and 128 kbps is more than enough for speech.

Can I play OGG files in my car?

Usually not. Most car stereos read MP3 from USB or CD but not OGG. Convert the files to MP3 and copy them to a FAT32 USB stick.

Are .oga and .opus files the same as OGG?

Very close. Both use the Ogg container: .oga is a general audio-only Ogg file, and .opus holds Opus audio. This converter handles them like any .ogg file.
