Extract the soundtrack from an MP4 video and save it as an OGG file, right in your browser. Choose Ogg Vorbis or Ogg Opus, the bitrate and the channels. The video is discarded and only the audio is kept. Files up to 250 MB work, and nothing is uploaded.

How to convert MP4 to OGG

  1. Add your MP4 video. Drag the video onto the converter or choose it from your device. Files up to 250 MB are supported.
  2. Pick a codec and bitrate. Vorbis for the widest compatibility, Opus for modern browsers and apps. 192 kbps is the default.
  3. Click Convert. The audio track is decoded and re-encoded as OGG inside your browser. The picture is ignored.
  4. Preview and download. Play the OGG in the result card, then save it to your device.

What the converter does

An MP4 file holds a video track and usually one AAC audio track. The converter reads the first audio track, decodes it and encodes it again as Vorbis or Opus in an Ogg container. Its length and timing stay the same. Already have an MP3? The MP3 to OGG converter skips the video step.

Because AAC is already lossy, the OGG is a second-generation copy. At 192 kbps the difference is very hard to hear, but the result never sounds better than the audio in the video.

When the conversion fails

  • The file is rejected. Only .mp4 and .m4v files are accepted.
  • The video is larger than 250 MB. Long, high-resolution videos can exceed the browser limit. Trim the video first.
  • The video is protected. Films and shows bought from online stores are usually copy-protected and cannot be converted.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MP4 to OGG?

Drop the MP4 video into the converter at the top of this page, choose a codec and bitrate, click Convert and download the .ogg file. Nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded.

Does the OGG file contain the video?

No. The converter keeps only the first audio track and discards the picture, so the OGG is an audio file.

Vorbis or Opus: which should I choose?

Choose Vorbis, the default, for game engines and older software that expect classic .ogg files. Choose Opus when your target is a modern browser or app that asks for it.

Which bitrate should I use?

Most MP4 videos carry AAC audio at 128 to 256 kbps. Choose a bitrate near that; going higher only makes the file bigger. Use 96 or 128 kbps for speech.

What if my video has no sound?

The conversion stops with a message, because there is no audio track to extract.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with WebAssembly. Your video stays on your device, and closing the tab clears it.
