What Does a Lo-Fi Converter Do?

A lo-fi converter takes a finished, clean recording and degrades it on purpose. It is not a compressor and not a format converter: the point is not a smaller file, it is a specific aesthetic — the muffled, crackling, slightly unsteady sound of music played back on worn equipment, which is what the lo-fi hip hop study streams popularised.

Doing it convincingly takes more than one effect. Slowing a track down alone just makes it slow; the character comes from stacking a filter, noise, reverb, quantisation and pitch drift so that no single one of them is obvious on its own.

The Five Effects, and What Each One Does

The converter renders these offline through the Web Audio API rather than recording playback, so a track is ready in seconds and the export is bit-identical to the preview.

Low-pass filter

Rolls off the high frequencies so the track sounds muffled and distant, the way a cassette or a stereo in the next room does.

Cutoff is adjustable from 1 kHz to 8 kHz. Lower is darker; around 3–4 kHz is the classic lo-fi range.

Vinyl crackle

Lays a bed of pops and surface noise under the music for the record-player feel, without needing a real turntable.

Generated procedurally at playback length rather than looped from a sample, so it never repeats audibly on long tracks.

Reverb

A convolution reverb that adds room and depth, which is what makes a lo-fi edit sound spacious rather than just dull.

Three decay lengths: Light 0.8 s, Medium 1.8 s, Heavy 3.5 s. The wet signal is mixed in at 35%, so the original stays present.

Bit crushing

Quantises the samples to a lower bit depth, adding the grit of early hardware samplers and game consoles.

16-bit, 12-bit, 8-bit, or off. 12-bit is the early-sampler sound; 8-bit is heavily degraded and obvious.

Tape wobble

A slow pitch modulation that imitates worn magnetic tape, giving the track a gentle woozy drift.

A 2 Hz LFO at a shallow depth — enough to feel unsteady, not enough to sound out of tune.

Slowed + reverb changes only two things: tempo and reverb. A lo-fi conversion also applies low-pass filtering, bit crushing, vinyl crackle and tape wobble, which is what produces the worn, vintage character rather than just a dreamy one. Both are available as separate tools on SonicLab.

Can I use the converted track commercially?

That depends entirely on the source. Converting a track to lo-fi does not grant you any rights to it, so you need to already own the original or have it under a licence that permits derivative works. SonicLab adds no restrictions of its own to the output.
